The City of Hattiesburg hosted a ribbon-cutting on Thursday to officially open its newest park, The Commons at Gordon’s Creek. Reflecting a $2.9 million investment, The Commons brings a bright new greenspace with a world of potential for the downtown Hattiesburg area.
Through the work of local legislators and the city, half of the funding for the project came from state and federal sources. While the Commons is now open to the public and even played host to the Hattiesburg Half Marathon celebration, the work will continue on the project to beautify the creek around it.
With Gordon’s Creek as the backdrop of the new greenspace, the Commons provides downtown Hattiesburg a new avenue for getting outside and appreciating nature and community.
“This is the part of the creek that always has water flowing, regardless of how much rain we’ve had,” said Hattiesburg’s Mayor Toby Barker. “It’s kind of a natural gathering spot for people to get close to the water…[the property] is also part of the continued focus on the core of our city, defining places, creating gathering spots and continuing to improve our quality of life while we address infrastructure, as well.”
