Pearl River football head coach Seth Smith has filled out his coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season with the addition of Blaise Breerwood.
Breerwood takes over the running backs room, replacing long-time assistant AJ Davis, who recently accepted a high school assistant coach position.
"We are extremely excited about adding Blaise to our staff. He's been a winner his entire life," head coach Seth Smith said. "He was a five-year letter in baseball and three-year letter in football, was part of winning multiple South State Championships in high school and is coming off a historic season for Mississippi College baseball. Simply put, he's a winner.
"One of his best attributes is his ability to connect with people. Coach Breerwood is a ray of light. He always brings positive energy and elevates the room. That connectivity and energy will make him a great recruiter and developer of talent. We are pumped he has decided to come home and help us achieve our goals. He's a future star in this profession, and we're glad he's a Wildcat."
Breerwood joins the coaching staff after graduating from Mississippi College, where he played baseball for two seasons and earned a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology.
"I'm blessed and excited. It's a great opportunity. I've played baseball my entire life and had football experience in high school," he said. "I wanted to get away from baseball once I was done with it and go into something else that I love, and that's football. Coach Smith gave me an opportunity, and I'm excited to have it. I'm starting to get things under control and better understand the program. I'm really excited about my running back room with the returners and a good group of newcomers."
During his senior season in 2025, the Choctaws had a historic year, advancing to regionals for the first time since 2018 and featuring in the championship game. Breerwood made 40 starts along the way, hitting .277 with seven doubles, one homer and 18 RBIs. He also excelled defensively, holding a fielding percentage of .978 and earning a spot on the ABCA's South Region All-Defensive Team at second base.
Before joining Mississippi College, Breerwood spent two seasons as a Wildcat. He redshirted in 2022 after transferring from Nicholls State but had a standout season in 2023. He featured in 57 games, holding a .251 batting average with nine doubles, two triples and one homer. He tallied 31 RBIs and scored 42 runs. He made just two errors in 179 total chances and did not make an error once conference play began. He was awarded the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove for his performance.
Although his collegiate background is in baseball, Breerwood is no stranger to the gridiron. He previously starred at Poplarville High School as a quarterback and a defensive back for the Hornets. Offensively, he passed for 454 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. For his career, he rushed for 296 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively, he racked up 107 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one interception across two seasons on that side of the ball. The Hornets won a trio of South State Championships during Breerwood's time with the program.
