Mary Sutherland Tatum (73), of Hattiesburg, passed peacefully surrounded by her family on September 16th, 2023.
Born on February 18,1950 in Hattiesburg, she was the oldest of five children. The University of Southern Mississippi gifted her with two lifelong loves; Phi Mu Sorority, and Occupational Therapy. After graduating, Mary brought her skills to the VA hospital in Gulfport.
In 1973 she married her high school sweetheart Joseph “Chip” Tatum, and devoted her life and love to her family. Always expecting to see her with loved ones watching the sunset over water, she was a patron of the arts and a savvy business leader. Serving on many corporate boards and committees including the Director and Secretary of Big Bay Lake Inc, Loresco Inc, and a board member of the Hattiesburg public library.
Of Mary, her friends, family, and loved ones will always know she placed their hearts and well being above and beyond her own.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gary and Coco Sutherland,
Mary is survived by her husband, Joseph “Chip” Tatum; son, Joseph F. Tatum III (Christy); daughter, Lady “Josey” Hirsch (Jeremy) all of Hattiesburg; sisters, Julia Sutherland, Bunnee Tanner of Lucedale, Jane O’Connell (Joseph) of Hattiesburg, and Amy Miller (Danny) of Gulfport; brother, Dan Sutherland (Vivian) of Lafayette CO; five adoring grandchildren, Britton Tatum, Cora Tatum, Adam Hood, Theia Hirsch, and Georgie Hirsch; and one much loved great grandchild.
