Joseph Martin “Marty” Bounds, 63, of Brandon, MS, died peacefully Saturday, October 21,2023. Marty was born June 26,1960, in Hattiesburg, MS, to John Lindsey Bounds, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Doherty Bounds. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hattiesburg. He graduated from Hattiesburg High School and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. He was an avid Golden Eagles fan. Marty lived out his adult life in Jackson and Brandon, MS.
If an example of a beautiful and meaningful life is one lived in kindness, laughter and service, then Marty Bounds’ time on earth was a masterpiece. If the count of people’s lives touched is what amasses riches, then Marty died the wealthiest. He never met a stranger, young, old, rich or poor that didn’t receive his attention and respect. Many of us have received the touch of his life without even knowing it as he served the greater Jackson community for over 35 years. Marty worked tirelessly to bring holidays to life and give celebrations special meaning through his dedication to his crafts of picture framer and floral designer. He was a gifted florist whose floral designs were well known throughout the Jackson community. Many offices will now be a little less festive without his touch.
Marty was always the first to a parade. Any reason to dress up in costume was a good one. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was courageous enough to rappel a 20 story building to raise funds for Children’s of Mississippi, “just cause I’m afraid of dying before I’ve done something in life.”
We are left trying to imagine our lives without his larger-than-life personality. If you are lucky enough to have his staple voicemail saved “Just checking in, you don’t have to call me back, I know I’m not the only one,” then you know he is the only one. There is only one Marty Bounds.
Get out a cocktail, preferably tequila, and toast this beautiful man’s life. Fill it with sass and stir it with love, his recipe for living.
Marty was preceded in death by his father, John Lindsey Bounds, Jr. He is survived by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Doherty Bounds, his sister, Linda Bounds Keng (Randy) of Madison, MS, along with extended family among whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle Marty.” He also leaves behind friends too numerous to count and his beloved Boston Terrier, Franco.
Fly high, Freebird! We will all miss you.
