Grady Lewis Myrick, Sr. (88) delighted in each new day whether watching the sun rise from the porch of his Perry County farm or seeing the setting sun reflecting off Egyptian pyramids. A voracious reader of the printed word, he made sure God’s word, The Holy Bible, was a part of his routine reading. A longtime business owner of building supplies, a community activist, a church leader, a family lover, and a friend to countless people, Lewis lived his retirement years traveling, serving his church, USM and WCU, working on his farm and encouraging and embracing those he loved.
Lewis was born in Laurel, MS, to Grady Columbus Myrick and Blanche Evans Myrick in 1935. The family moved to Hattiesburg when he was three-years-old. He attended USM Demonstration School in grades 1-9 and graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1953. At The University of Southern Mississippi, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1956. Since that time, Lewis was a strong supporter of his alma mater with membership in the Eagle Club, Century Club, “M” Club, USM Foundation, and athletic events. He was a member of the USM Hall of Fame, President’s Circle, Foundation Board of Directors, and Foundation Investment Committee.
From 1956 to 1995 Lewis worked in the family business, Economy Supply, first with his father and brother and later as the sole senior owner. His decades of service to the building community brought him many friends and much pleasure. The business is now operated by the fourth generation of the family. In addition to his business and USM activities, he was active in community and church. As a founding member of the Rotary Sunrise Club, he served as president, and was a Rotarian of the Year, and a Paul Harris Fellow for outstanding service. Lewis was a charter member and officer of the Hattiesburg Downtown Association and the City Planning Board. He served on the Hattiesburg Convention Center Commission for 20 years and was chairman of the finance committee. He was also a member of many organizations including Hattiesburg Homebuilders Association, Perry County Forest Association, Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera, Kindness Foundation, Hattiesburg Zoological Association, and the Oaks District Historical Society.
The Baptist Church and his faith played a significant role in his life. Lewis became a Christian and was baptized at age nine at Hardy Street Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, bible teacher, and early Sunday morning coffee maker through the years. No job was too small or too large for him to accept at the church of his childhood and youth. In retirement he served the Baptist denomination as a member of the Board of Trustees of William Carey University for nearly 20 years and delighted in the remarkable growth and progress of the university.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; his seven-month-old son, Glen Collins Myrick; his brother, Robert Howard Myrick; and his first wife, Thelma Lee Register Myrick Green.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Margie Loustalot Covington Myrick; four children, Grady Lewis Myrick, Jr. (Myra), Michael Lance Myrick (Susan), Katherine Alicia Myrick Cobb (Marty), Elizabeth Leigh Myrick Buckley; his step-son, Jesse Lawson Covington, Jr. (Kaye); his 11 grandchildren, Bettie Melinda Myrick, Grady Lewis Myrick III (Meghan), James Glenn Myrick, Michael Lance Myrick, Jr. (Stacee), Ryan Lee Myrick (Mary Alice), Katie Lee Lloyd, Leslie Grace Nix (Peter), Christen Jane Eason, Leah Beth Buckley, Bo Fisher Buckley (Kelsie), and Eliza Gene Myrick (Ruffin); his step-grandchildren, Caroline Kaye Covington and Mary Katherine Covington; and 10 great grandchildren.
He died on May 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Visitation was held on May 28 at Hardy Street Baptist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life.
Interment will be at Roseland Park Cemetery following the service.
