Mrs. Gerrard was a native of Grenada and a resident of Hattiesburg since 1959. She and her husband, A.L. “Bud” Gerrard, owned One Hour Martinizing Cleaners until Mr. Gerrard’s election as Hattiesburg city commissioner in 1972. He was elected mayor in 1973 and re-elected in 1977. Mrs. Gerrard was the first woman to serve on the Hattiesburg School Board in 1972 and became chairman in 1976. She also served on the boards of the South Central Mississippi chapter of the American Red Cross, Hattiesburg Public Library, and the Hattiesburg Junior Auxillary. She volunteered at the Christian Women’s Job Corps and the Court Appointed Special Advocate service. Eleanor’s passion, though, was her faith and her church. She worshipped and served at First Baptist Church in many capacities for over fifty years.
Eleanor Green Gerrard graduated Grenada High School in May 1947 and matriculated to Mississippi College the following September. She was elected “Most Beautiful” her freshman year at MC. Mrs. Gerrard transferred to Ole Miss in the fall of 1948 and joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was selected as a campus favorite in 1948, 1949, and 1950; and an Ole Miss beauty in 1949 and 1950. She graduated in 1951 with a B.A. in Education. She taught high school English in Grenada and Hattiesburg for several years.
Mrs. Gerrard is survived by her daughters Melissa Rutland and Tracie Gulley, and their husbands Dwight Rutland and Jim Gulley, all of Oxford, four grandchildren, Ben Steadman, Jay Gulley, Rob Gulley, and Kate Potts, and four great-grandchildren.
