John Michael Young, Jr. (75), of Hattiesburg, passed away on May 8, 2023. Services will be held on Thursday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m. at Moore Hattiesburg Chapel.
Services were held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home Chapel for Mr. Lewis Dees Clinton, 85, of Hattiesburg, MS who died Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg, MS. Services were conducted by Mr. Clinton's Pastor and dear friend, Bro. Vance Moore, Pastor of Central Christian Church in Hattiesburg where Mr. Clinton was named Elder Emeritus in 2016. Music for the service was provided by Brad Day, nephew of Mr. Clinton.
Visitation began at 1:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Scooter Day, Mike Blackwell, Willis Lott, Ronnie Shows, Andrew Day, and Kip Williamson. Honorary Pallbearers were Gerald Sanders, William Ray, and Harry Crumpler, Sr.
Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia, MS.
Mr. Clinton was born in Sumrall on June 13, 1937. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1956 and from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1960 with a degree in Accounting. After graduation, he began working for the Mississippi Tax Commission in Jackson, MS. He obtained a Master of Business Education Degree from USM in 1975.
In 1966, Mr. Clinton and his wife opened their own business, Associated Business Services from their home. They had many clients on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and in the surrounding counties. Their clients became their family. They attended many life events with them.
Mr. Clinton and his close friend, Harry Crumpler, Sr. opened the Auto Buyers Group business together from 1998 until 2019. Lewis could answer any question you had about cars. Mr. Crumpler stated that Lewis always exemplified what a Christian should be.
Mr. Clinton was an avid sports fan of Sumrall High School and USM. He did not let rain or cold deter him from the games. He had an amazing memory and could tell you about plays of the games that happened years ago.
Mr. Clinton was devoted to the Lamar County (Oak Grove) Lions Club, serving for many years as Treasurer and was recognized for his service. He was named Lion of the Year in 1993 and 2006. He received the MS Lions Sight Foundation Archie Bethune Award for 2003-2004. He received the Lions Club International Foundation Melvin Jones Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Services award in 2006-2007.
Mr. Clinton was a long time member of the Lamar County Democratic Committee serving as Treasurer for many years.
Lewis, for many years, enjoyed meeting a group at Merit Health Wesley for lunch. He made some lifelong friendships there. His great friend, Mike Blackwell stated on Facebook that Lewis was as kind and gentle a person as you would ever meet.
Lewis will always be remembered as a caring and empathetic man. He treated others with kindness and compassion and assumed the best of people.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Penny Sanders Clinton and his parents, William Lewis Clinton and Annie Pearl Dees Clinton.
He is survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Pam Sanders Day and Scooter Day of Hattiesburg, Dianne Sanders Ray and William Ray of Columbia, and Gerald and Alavene Sanders of Columbia as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
The family of Lewis Clinton would like to thank the administration, nurses, and staff of Brookdale Assisted Living for their care of Lewis for the past two years.
We would also like to thank Dr. Edwin Seelye at Merit Health Wesley for being so caring, considerate, and kind. He and his team did a wonderful job. Thank you to all of the nurses and staff at Wesley.
