John Douglas Alcorn (88) passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 2:00 PM at University Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM.
John D. was born to Leonard L. and Lora Mae (Self) Alcorn on January 2, 1934 in Lamesa, Texas. He grew up on a dairy farm which instilled his work ethic, and his love for land and agriculture. He earned a degree in Agricultural Sciences (B.Sc.) at East Texas State University, where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC. He married Lela Ann in March 1956, and subsequently served on active duty with the US Air Force as a jet pilot. He returned to graduate education to earn his Master of Education (M.Ed.), and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from East Texas State University in 1965. He then joined the faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi and, during the next 35 years, he was passionately committed to building a world class program for educating students in the disciplines of Psychology. He served as Chair of the Psychology Department for 27 years through multiple periods of transition and growth. He was recognized by USM for his leadership and by multiple professional organizations as well as his many undergraduate and graduate students for his “meritorious and dedicated service and commitment.”
Following retirement, he enjoyed reconnecting with Air Force friends and travel. He cherished his family and his large group of Hattiesburg friends. His favorite pastime was caring for a rural acreage in Forrest County that he owned for over 50 years. He continued with his lifelong love of music; he played piano, banjo, and sang with the University Baptist Church choir and the Visionaires. He was a gifted man who had a remarkable talent for making those around him feel recognized and special.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Lela Ann Pike Alcorn.
He is survived by his wife Pat Valadez Alcorn, with whom he shared his love of music and his final years; his brother, Duane Alcorn (Jo Anne) of College Station, TX; his sister, Neva Nell Long (Leon) of Austin, TX; three children, Sherry Ann Martin (John Forrest) of Indianapolis, IN, Shelley Kay Gaggini (Jerry, deceased) of Tupelo, MS, and Stuart Douglas Alcorn (Lisa, deceased) of San Antonio, TX; one step-daughter, Melinda Carol Robinson (Michael) of Hattiesburg; grandchildren, John Rhodes Martin of Indianapolis, IN, Nathaniel Grey Jones (Amanda) of Dallas, TX, Melissa Nix Kiel (Brandon) of Indianapolis, IN, Lora Claire Dickerson (Bill) of Tupelo, MS, Kayla Ann Baxter (Brent) of Tupelo, MS, Kyler Hicks of San Antonio, TX, Amanda Ivy Broyles (Drew) of Oxford, MS, Alyson Ruth Alcorn of San Antonio, TX, and Katherine Ann Austin (Tristan) of Abilene, TX; great grandchildren, Buren Lee Kiel, Everett Douglas Kiel, Bradyn Lela Baxter, William Murry Dickerson, IV, Bentley Jones Baxter, Ada Ann Kiel, Thomas Grey Dickerson, Benjamin Maddox Broyles, and Lany June Jones.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery with Military Honor performed by the V.F.W. 3036.
Mr. Austin was retired owner and operator of Austin Floor Covering and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Doris Gannon and Mary Nell Childers.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jeanette(Pat) Austin of Petal, MS; three sons, James Gary Austin of Petal, MS, Phillip R. Austin of Petal, MS, and Mark Addison Austin (Susan) of the Oak Grove Community, MS; two daughters, Janet Georgene Bunkelman (Dave) of Richton, MS and Cheryl Ann Smith (Donald) of Long Beach, MS; eleven grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, January 13, 2023, at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home.

Peggy Clinton, 77, died Monday, January 9, 2023 in the front bedroom of her home in the Panhandle Community of Choctaw County. She was born in this same front bedroom on May 28, 1945, to Winston Davis Kerr and Nora Jessie Sims Kerr. She was the third of their four children.
Peggy attended the Panhandle School and was a graduate of Weir High School. After high school she was employed by Southern Bell, in Jackson. She later lived in Monticello and Hattiesburg, Mississippi before returning back home in January of 2002.
While in Hattiesburg, she was employed by The Advertiser News, The Petal News and the Lamar County News. Peggy was instrumental in founding and managing a company that originated and operated several weekly newspapers and radio stations across south Mississippi. She remained active in the various business that she and her husband operated for over fifty years, until illness and poor eyesight ended her career.
Peggy loved flowers, was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed reading and traveling. Always competitive, in her early years she participated in both slow pitch softball leagues and a women’s bowling league. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jessie Davis Kerr of the Panhandle Community, and her sister Annie Elizabeth (Becky) Ray of Terry, Mississippi. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, James Ernest (Jim) Clinton, her brother Henry Lee Kerr (Sudah) of Valdosta, GA, her daughter Rhonda Sue Harvill (Barry), of Hoover, AL, her stepsons Herbert Nickey (Nick) Boyd of Orlando, FL, James Paul Clinton of Daphne, AL, her stepdaughter Anita Sharyl Donegan (Ron) of Brookhaven, MS, two grandchildren Brandon Marlowe Fort and
Jacqueline Eliza Fort both of Hoover, Alabama along with nine step grandchildren. Billy R. Ervin, Sr., of Petal, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023 at his home. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Petal with services immediately following at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Mr. Ervin was a member of Petal Harvey Baptist Church. He served in the United States Navy and the Mississippi National Guard Air Force and Army Units. He was a newspaper owner for 30 years having operated the Union Appeal in Newton County, the Stone County Enterprise in Stone County, and the Newspaper in Lamar County. He served as Alderman of the City of Wiggins from 1972-1976. He was also a Park Manager of Pat Harrison Waterway.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dora Ervin; and five siblings, Charles Ervin, Lex Ervin, Mary Helen Kelly, Larry Ervin, and Medford Ervin.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Walton Ervin; one son, Billy Ervin, Jr. (Jan) of Petal; one daughter, Dianne Schoenbachler (Joe) of Newland, N.C.; five grandchildren, Rebecca Sullivan (Michael), B.J. Ervin (Kelly), Luke Ervin (Sarah), Jamie Matta (Joe), and Nicholas Schoenbachler (Morgan); and 11 great grandchildren, Dane, Piper, Adleigh, Annalynn, Elyse, Caroline, Grayson, Hadley, Dawson, Hart, and Eli.
Graveside Services were held Friday, January 06 at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery for Mr. Virgil Cooley Saul, Jr., 94, of Petal, MS who died Tuesday, January 03, 2023.
Mr. Saul retired from USM in 1992 and attend Petal United Methodist Church. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Was before retiring from the USAF in 1973.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Cooley, Sr. and Lena Rogers Saul; three sisters, Violet Nobles, Ruby Lee Shaw, and Vera Saul; three brothers, J. Miller Saul, James Saul, and OC Saul.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia W. Saul of Petal, MS; two daughters, Kathryn Saul Dunbar (Paul) of Hattiesburg, MS, and Amanda Jean Bazor (James) of Petal, MS; one son, Virgil Clark Saul of SC; three sisters, Betty Lowe of Lumberton/Baxterville, MS, Lottie Refice of FL, and Jean Saul of Lumberton/Baxterville; one brother, George Washington Saul of Sandersville, MS; three grandchildren, Dr. Ellyn Dunbar of Pittsburg, PA, James "Koty" Baxor of Tulsa, OK, and Jena Grace Bazor of Petal, MS.
