Harold Bethea “H.B.” Lowery (86), of Petal, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Forrest General Hospital. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 28 at Moore Petal Chapel, followed by with interment in Highland Cemetery.
Mr. Lowery was born on April 8, 1937 to Coy and Henrietta Lowery. He was a member of Carterville Baptist Church. He retired after 32 years of service with South Mississippi Electric Power Association. He served his community as a founding member of the School Board of Petal Municipal Separate School District. He was also a master mason of the Petal Lodge.
He enjoyed working with his cows, loved his tractor, riding horses, gatherings with his friends at “The Shed,” and his cookouts. He was an avid football fan and loved the game. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play football, baseball, and basketball. He loved to travel with his family and friends. he was known to many as “H.B.” and “Mayor of Leeville”. But his name of Papa was his favorite. He was a friend to many and always enjoyed a good time. In his latter years, his joy was his great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Lavada Ott Gibbs and Sue Massey.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Kathleen “Kitty” Koch Lowery; his children, Cathi Jefcoat (Gregg), Mike Lowery (Debbie), Mack Lowery (Paige), and Pattie Lowery; his grandchildren, Julie Lowery George (Stephen), Chris Lowery (Cristina), Austin Lowery (Amanda), Cory Mack Lowery, Jake Lowery (Shelbi), Luke Lowery (Brooke), Beau Jefcoat (Violet), and Bret Jefcoat; 12 great grandchildren; his sister, Patricia Moran; his brother, Cecil Lowery; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His grandsons served as his pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Lionel Ladner, L.B. Runnels, Terry Steede, Jimmy Dale Odom, Richard Cox, Bruce Rodgers, and Jerry Simon.
Dr. Tom D. Martin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed physician, passed away on February 23rd, 2024, at the age of 87. He was born on December 25th, 1936, to Charles Dean Martin and Virginia (Ruddick) Martin.
He married Nina Aut on December 27, 1959 and she passed away on February 13, 2022 after 62 years of marriage. He married Betty Taylor on July 9, 2022 and she survives him.
Dr. Martin is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Taylor-Martin, two daughters Christy Pierce and husband Sid of Hattiesburg, MS and Beth Stevenson and husband Rich of Auburndale, FL. He also leaves behind a legacy of several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several nephews, and his life-long friend, Tom Warner.
Dr. Martin dedicated over 60 years of his life to serving as a physician, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless patients. He also proudly served in the Army National Guard and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
In his free time, Dr. Martin enjoyed playing tennis and golf, cooking delicious meals, tending to his garden, and following March Madness and Holiday Tournament games.In his younger years, he had a passion for playing the trumpet. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, who meant the world to him.
A visitation for family and friends was held on February 28 at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia.
