Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Pat Martin met her Savior face-to-face on November 27, 2022.
Born February 7, 1929, in Montgomery, Alabama, the daughter of Willie Ezra Pinson, Sr. and Florence Idell Stoddard Pinson. In middle school, Pat attended church with a friend where she had an experience that she often said shaped the rest of her life. For the first time, she understood that Christ had sacrificed himself for her, and that His act of love made it possible for her to begin a right relationship with God. She responded to His love by committing the rest of her life to Him, and the rest of her life was a testimony of her joy in Christ.
Pat received her nursing diploma from Mississippi Baptist Hospital and a biology degree from William Carey College. In 1955, she married William D. “Step” Martin, a fellow student at William Carey. Pat practiced nursing as a new wife and young mother. She joyfully served the Lord with “Step,” who became an evangelist and pastor. They ministered together at Sanford Baptist Church near Hattiesburg, MS; Navco Baptist Church in Mobile, AL; First Baptist Church, Satsuma, AL; and Calvary Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA.
While at Calvary she also taught science for many years and served as an administrator at Calvary Baptist Academy. After retiring from their ministry at Calvary, Pat joined “Step” in traveling for the next 12 years, encouraging and mentoring pastors’ wives as “Step” preached in many churches.
For more than 70 years, “Mrs. Pat” was honored to live out the commitment she made to Jesus as a teenager. She saw the Word of God as Jesus’ love letter to her—and to the world. She taught it to hundreds of women, mentoring and discipling them in their faith. She was known for her habit of reading the Bible through from start to finish every year. She boldly encouraged everyone that she influenced to do the same. Year after year, she gave an original work of calligraphy to those who joined her in this practice. Passionate to see Christ’s love change the world, she led numerous international mission trips.
Pat’s love for Jesus was evidenced by the joy that radiated from her life. She was known for her bright smile and her winsome personality. Her ability to love others flowed from the joy she experienced every day in knowing Jesus, and now her joy is complete as she beholds her Savior’s face.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents, her five siblings Andrew Stoddard Pinson, Sr., Willie Ezra Pinson, Jr., Sarah Elizabeth Pinson Putman, Mickie Nell Pinson Ray, Annie Laura Pinson Solomon, and her husband, Dr. William D. “Step” Martin, who passed away in September 2022. She is survived by her six children - Marty William Martin (Carla), Tammy Darlene Martin Lundquist (Robert), William D. “Bill” Martin, Jr. (Dedee), Dr. Robert Tate “Bob” Martin (Pam), Teena Delores Martin Ward (Bryan) and Teri Denise Martin Logan (Darren); sixteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and her sister-in-law, Delores Burkett (Billy Ray) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
