The high school football season has fully commenced. Last week six of area teams came away with season-opening wins.
Oak Grove 38, Grenada 24
Sophomore quarterback Kellen Hall threw for 306 yards and a touchdown after finishing 19-for-27. Hall’s top target of the night was Kaiden Smith, who hauled in five catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. Running back Kylin Champagne ran for 85 yards and two scores. Jamar Pittman led the Warriors with 14 total tackles, while Keesler Jenkins came down with two interceptions. Oak Grove starts the season 1-0 and will host Ocean Springs this week.
Sacred Heart 41, St. Patrick 14
The Crusaders win the Battle for Bell for a second straight year and begin the season 1-0. Quarterback Kyron Murphy finished 7-for-15 and passed for 81 yards and two touchdowns and tacked on 59 yard and a touchdown from the ground. Running back Adam Sneed ran for 88 yards and two scores. Sacred Heart hosts West Lincoln for its home-opener this week.
FCAHS 34, St. Stanislaus 10
The Aggies start the year 1-0 after running back Terrence Horne ran for 136 yards and threw a passing touchdown. Fullback Omarion Reed had 10 carries for 75 yards and three touchdowns. On defense the Aggies were led by Ethan Norman, who posted 11 tackles. FCAHS will host Long Beach this week.
PCS 28, Lamar 22
The Bobcats improve to 2-0 and will travel to play Resurrection Catholic this week.
Lumberton 27, Purvis 14
The Panthers’ defense were led by Ta’Kell Lee, who posted 17 tackles and two tackles for loss. Chase Toney, Micah Sayles and Romello Edwards each came down with an interception. Purvis’ lone passing touchdown came from Hunter Brewer, who connected with Paxton Cooper. The Panthers travel to play North Forrest this week, while Purvis hosts Pass Christian.
Hattiesburg 7, Petal 3
Leading the Tigers in the defensive slugfest was Cameron Craft, who posted eight total tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Hattiesburg (1-0) totaled four sacks as a team. Amari Bowman led the Panthers with seven tackles and two TFLs. Hattiesburg hosts rival Laurel this week, while Petal (0-1) will host St. Martin for its home opener.
Pisgah 34, North Forrest 32
The Eagles start the year 0-1 and host Lumberton.
South Jones 13, Sumrall 0
Gavin Glass led the Bobcats (0-1) on defense with nine tackles. Sumrall hosts West Harrion this week.
