Oak Grove football found out during practice on Tuesday that Meridian was forfeiting its game as a result of COVID-19 protocols.
The Warriors will instead get a bye, which according to Oak Grove coach Drew Causey could not come at a better time as Hurricane Delta approaches the Gulf Coast.
“The good thing is that it is supposed to rain all day Thursday with thunderstorms,” Causey said. “You don’t really know what’s going to happen. You think there will be lightning delays, but you just don’t know. Friday, there is a hurricane coming. It’s kind of a win-win, really. You don’t have to play in the nasty weather, and you still get a win. It all works out for the best.
“For us, (the forfeit) lets us get a couple of guys healthy that were banged up a little that would have still played. It gives them another week to kind of heal up.”
Oak Grove will now set its sights on region foe Terry, which is scheduled for Oct. 16. Terry has had to forfeit for three consecutive weeks due to COVID-19 and will make its return to the season against the Warriors.
“We’ll start watching film on Terry and get ready for them,” Causey said. “I don’t really know what you’ll see from them because they have been out, this would be the third week they have canceled, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with that yet. We are just trying to get ready for them, and hopefully, they get to play and go up there and see what happens.”
