The No. 15 Pearl River women's soccer team has proven it can score goals just two games into the season, netting seven Thursday night to defeat East Central 7-0 and push its season total to 15.
"Our freshman class is really good, and we think it was one of the top in the state," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "They're super gifted so this is kind of what we expected to happen. We've improved on the attacking front and have been a lot more clinical in front of goal."
Pearl River (2-0 overall) struck first just seven minutes in on a rocket from Alesha Gale (Rotherham, England). After an East Central (2-1-1) clearance fell to her outside the box, Gale took one touch before blasting a shot from more than 20 yards into the back of the net, 1-0.
The Wildcats doubled their lead before the break. Walker Rodney (Sumrall) delivered a perfect pass into the box for Morgan Eleuterius (Long Beach), who calmly slotted it past the keeper, 2-0.
PRCC poured it on in the second half. Gale collected her brace in the 49th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Julie Svensson-Olesen's (Aarhus, Denmark) shot to make it 3-0. Seven minutes later, Holly Jones (Liverpool, England) set up Ida Lillebæk (Vejle, Denmark), who drilled a low strike inside the post for a 4-0 advantage.
Jones then got on the scoresheet herself when a shot caromed off the post and fell to her feet for a simple finish, 5-0. She added an assist moments later, sending in a pinpoint cross for Margaret Compretta (Waveland; Our Lady Academy), who one-timed it home for 6-0.
Jones capped the night with her second goal, cleaning up a scramble in front of the net to seal the 7-0 victory.
