The Petal Family YMCA is putting out the call for individuals who have a passion for swimming, health and working with children to become part of the YMCA team as swim coaches and afterschool counselors.
Swim coach candidates don’t necessarily need to be championship-caliber swimmers, but must be adept at working with groups of younger kids.
“The biggest thing we’re looking for is being able to work well with children,” said Corey Coon-Cassily, director of competitive swimming at the YMCA. “The technical skills, we can help teach, but it’s skills of working with kids that we’re looking for.”
Job duties will include supervising groups of younger participants – usually from the Petal School District – and instruction, safety, planning and organization. The job would consist of after-school hours, mainly in the 3:30-5:30 p.m. time frame, with a flexible schedule.
Counselors would work in the YMCA’s afterschool program, primarily from 3-6 p.m., supervising children with homework, fitness activities and other structured activities.
“So it’d be more being viable and being open to activities, and they would have supervisors that devise the plan for them,” Coon-Cassily said. “It’d be more of them implementing a plan given to them by their supervisors.”
Interested applicants must be 18 or older and can visit the YMCA’s front desk or call (601) 583-9399 to leave their information for consideration.
“(We’re looking to hire) as soon as possible,” Coon-Cassily said. “School’s already started here, so we’d like to get going as soon as possible.”
