Jason James is more than ready to take on the mantle of assistant chief for the Petal Police Department – in fact, it’s what he’s worked for his entire career.
“We start out at the bottom level when we get certified as a police officer, and you work to achieve that level as you go through the years,” James said. “I’m in my 21st year (in law enforcement now), and it’s great to see that finally I’ve been considered and given the opportunity to help lead the department.”
James was approved to the position, effective Jan. 16, by a unanimous vote at last week’s meeting of the Petal Board of Aldermen. James, who previously served as captain at the department, takes over for former assistant chief Matthew Hiatt, who was sworn in as chief earlier this month.
“I’d like to continue on the path we’re on,” James said. “We’ve got a really good department right now, and I just see minimal changes at best.
“I’ve talked to the chief, and I’m on board with him – whichever way he’s going, I’m going with him. He’s got a good idea where he wants to go. He gave me his vision, and I’ll follow his lead.”
James spent his first six years as a law enforcement officer with the Hattiesburg Police Department before coming to Petal. He has been at Petal for more than 14 years, including the last eight years as captain.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with him side-by-side those 14 years, and I don’t believe you’ll find a more dedicated individual to the police department,” Hiatt said. “He is a highly-trained, experienced individual, and trustworthy. I trust him, and I trust that he’ll do well at the position of assistant chief.
