Lamar Co. students headed to Las Vegas with Lions BandBy BUSTER WOLFE,
Eight Oak Grove High School students will be traveling to Las Vegas next week as members of the award-winning Mississippi Lions Band after practicing this week at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville.
The band, which changed its traditional practices from Jones County Junior College to PRCC, will travel to the 101st annual Lions Clubs International Convention June 29-July 3 at the MGM Grand Resort. The Mississippi group has been the International Champion 33 times, including 13 of the last 15 years.
Oak Grove High School students who are band members include Elizabeth Porter, dancer; Taylor Hart, flute; Channing Shows, tenor saxophone; Jaylen Mack, Andrew Lott, Cole Calendar and Bear Mitchell, trumpets, and Juliana Hinton, trombone. Trombone player Tucker Sellers of Forrest County AHS is also a member of the band.
Colorguard, dancers, jazz band and percussion arrived at PRCC on Tuesday, while the remainder of the band arrived Wednesday. A Grand Concert Finale will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 27 at Brownstone Performing Arts Center.
