The Lamar County School District will have enough mascots to field its own basketball team when the unofficial start of the 2018-19 school begins with the Convocation Aug. 3.
With the addition of the Lumberton Panthers to the Lamar County fold, the other school mascots include the Oak Grove Warriors, the Sumrall Bobcats, the Purvis Tornadoes and the Baxterville Rebels. Superintendent Tess Smith said she has been pleased with the response from the mascots.
“All of it has been very positive,” she said.
This year’s theme for the district will show the unity of the five schools.
“Our theme this year is ‘#As1LCSD,” she said. “It was introduced during the budget talks earlier this year. With the addition of Lumberton schools, we want everyone to realize that we are all try to reach the same goals.”
Last year’s theme for the Lamar County School District was #knowyourwhy. Teachers, staff and administration wore different colors of T-shirts for the 2017 Convocation with the theme on each one.
Smith said she worked with the staff and administration to come up with this year’s theme.
“I came up with the idea of what we wanted to say,” she said. “Then, everyone give their thoughts and opinions on it. We tried to take a large concept and shorten it as much as possible.”
Smith said the Convocation will be held in the afternoon of Aug. 3.
