Two grants will allow Central Lamar Volunteer Fire Department to purchase a commercial pumper and hire three more firefighters, the Lamar County Board of Supervisors were told at last Thursday’s meeting.
Central Lamar was awarded a $90,000 Round 12 Rural Fire Truck Acquisition Assistance Grant to help pay for the pumper, which costs $299,999. The pumper is mounted on a Freightliner chassis by Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc.
In addition to the RFTAAP grant, funds will be used from the sale of a 1995 pumper and a Mississippi Development Authority CAP loan. The first $90,000 MDA CAP loan payments must come from sources other than Insurance Rebate Funding.
Central Lamar Fire Protection District also is in line to receive a SAFER Grant to hire three 24-hour on/48-hour off firefighters. Central Lamar plans to place these firefighters at Central Lamar Station No. 3 on Hwy. 589.
Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants awarded are awarded to fire departments and national, state, local, tribal or territorial organizations that represent the interests of volunteer firefighters.
