A developer who had been having trouble trying to build three houses in a Lamar County subdivision was approved by the Lamar County Board of Supervisors Monday morning, despite objections by the supervisor whose district includes the subdivision.
The Board of Supervisors met in the William J. “Pete” Gamble III County Courthouse in Purvis.
District 5 Supervisor Dale Lucus sought assurances from developer Chris Moore that he would help repair the roadway in the Heatherwood Subdivision, which is located off U.S. Hwy. 589. Both agreed that the road is in poor shape now, but neither the county nor Moore are responsible for the condition.
“Chris, I am going to approve this, but I want your word on something,” Lucus said when the introduction of the Phase II plat was introduced. The construction has been held up for at least a month. “If you go in there and tear this road up, you will help Bud (Sumrall, the owner of the property) fix it.”
“Dale, I’m not going to give you that word because I feel that I am not responsible for something that I didn’t develop or do,” Moore said.
“The biggest thing is I’ve got a problem there and I’ve had a problem for awhile,” Lucus responded. “We know it’s wet; you know it’s wet. I don’t want to see that road come to pieces with concrete trucks and gravel trucks. If they go in there and tear it up, I’m just asking to help patch it back.”
The subdivision has 34 homes. Moore has already built four. Lucus said he would put up a game camera to see what damage is caused.
Moore said other developers have gone over the road before him.
“Why me and why now?” Moore asked. “There’s 34 houses in there; I’m the seventh guy to go in there and build houses. Why didn’t you ask the other guys? … If the man had finished the subdivision, you wouldn’t be getting those phone calls.”
District 2 Supervisor Warren Byrd said the plat should be approved for the three houses.
“I’m going to make a motion to approve it as is,” he said. “This is getting out of control and the man is trying to make a living.”
The board voted 4-1 to approve Byrd’s motion, with Lucus dissenting.
