Got a penchant for pottery?
Then you are in luck. Empty Bowls is calling all area potters to show your creative side in preparation for this year’s fundraiser. An Empty Bowls Throw-A-Thon is set from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Main Street Books, 210 N. Main St. in downtown Hattiesburg.Help is needed to help craft bowls for Empty Bowls 2018, which benefits the Edwards Street Fellowship Center food pantry in Hattiesburg.
During last year’s Throw-A-Thon, students, teachers, small business owners, web designers and a baker sacrificed a Saturday afternoon to bring hope and help to hungry neighbors through this year’s Empty Bowls event. At the end of the day they had tallied more than 100 bowls, some simple and others with intricate etching or delicate fluting.
"More than 1,200 households across the Pine Belt depend on our food pantry every month for basic food staples,” said Ann McCullen, director of the Edwards Street food pantry. “It's hard to believe there are that many 'empty bowls' in our neighborhoods and communities. But so many of us can make a difference for these hungry neighbors as we support the Empty Bowls event."
Empty Bowls, in its seventh year, is a community project to raise money for local hunger prevention efforts. This year’s event is set for Saturday, Oct. 13. This is free event with clay, pottery wheel and snacks provided. Please bring your own pottery tools. If you’d like to help but can’t attend, you can still get a tax receipt for donating bowls (even your “seconds”) or let them provide you with clay to make bowls in your studio. Empty Bowls will have them glazed and fired, if needed.
