DuPree requesting zoning change

Former Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree is requesting a zoning change for his Main Street home in advance of an upcoming public hearing on the matter.

DuPree, who said the property has been zoned for business for quite some time, is requesting to rezone from the current B-2 (neighborhood business) to R-1A (residential).

“Believe it or not, (it’s zoned as business,)” DuPree said. “For whatever reason, it was never changed, so to correct that we had to request the zoning change.”

A public hearing will be held regarding the request at 1 p.m. April 3 on the first floor of Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center, 220 W. Front St. in downtown Hattiesburg. During the public hearing, which will be held before the Hattiesburg Planning Commission, all parties of interests and residents will have the opportunity to ask questions or hear details of the matter.

“It’s a residential property, and has been for over a hundred or so years,” DuPree said. “When the city went through the rezoning process back in the ‘80s, it was improperly zoned. So this will put it in the (proper classification), which is residential.”v
