Behold the Gold: USM homecoming Activities

It’s Homecoming Week at the University of Southern Mississippi and the City of Hattiesburg is doing its part to participate in this week-long celebration dubbed “Behold the Gold.”

On Monday night, Mayor Toby Barker helped “pump up” students attending the Dance Contest at Reed Green Coliseum. Councilman Nick Brown served as a dance contest judge.

In other Homecoming activities the city will have a lawn float outside City Hall and is helping co-host Live @ Five/Fridday Night at the Fountain Pep Rally to be held during the intermission of Live @ Five in Town Square Park.

The famous Fountain Sit will take place from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the Shoemaker Square fountain. During this time contestants will climb into the fountain to test their endurance and Southern Miss knowledge.

The Dixie Darlings will also have a Reunion Dinner on Friday night at the Cochran Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the Alumni Association Awards Lunch will feature recognition of alums and other supporters of USM for their outstanding service to the university.

Prior to Saturday’s game, the 75th annual homecoming parade will take place at 11 a.m., travelling east down Hardy Street from 38th Ave to the main entrance of the Hattiesburg campus. Former USM football and NFL standout Adalius Thomas will serve as the parade’s grand marshal. The event will also feature the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band, current and former Dixie Darlings, the USM homecoming court and a variety of floats and decorated vehicles representing student groups and campus and area organizations and businesses.
