If you’re in need of timber, the Lamar County School Board may have exactly what you’re looking for.
The school board is accepting bids for the final timber harvest of more than 87 acres of land off Pine Burr Road in Baxterville. The purchase will be on a lump sum basis and will include all timber on the property, whether standing or down.
“We work with the state on that,” district superintendent Tess Smith said. “They tell us when to thin it and when to do a final harvest, so that’s what this is.”
The total amount of timber is estimated to be approximately 16 tons of pine poles, 3,902 tons of pine sawtimber, 1,075 tons of pine Chip-N-Saw, 684 tons of pine pulpwood, 74 tons of hardwood sawtimber and 777 tons of hardwood pulpwood. Each bidder is expected to cruise the land and to bid accordingly, and the timber may be inspected at any time.
Bids will be accepted until 10 a.m. Feb. 11, mailed to the Lamar County Board of Education School District Office, P.O. Box 609, Purvis, MS, 39475. Before bids are submitted, full information on the timber, sale, and submission of bids should be obtained from area forester Shawn Harrison at (601) 624-0413 or from the Mississippi Forestry Comm. Region 4 office at (601) 528-4873.
Once the timber is sold, officials from the school district will work with state foresters on when and how to replant the land.
“They help us manage our timber,” Smith said.
