Investigators with the Hattiesburg Police Department are looking into the thefts of six different vehicles in the last seven days.
Four of the thefts were taken from commercial properties on major thoroughfares including Hardy Street, U.S. Highway 49, and U.S. Highway 98.
In almost every case, the vehicles were left unlocked with the keys sometimes left in the ignition.
n Tuesday, Jan. 22 – 6000-block of U.S. Hwy 98 – Commercial, Ford Explorer (door unlocked with keys inside, later recovered)
n Wednesday, Jan. 23 – 900-block of Hardy Street- Residential, 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, (unlocked with keys left in ignition)
n Thursday, Jan. 24 – 6500-block of U.S. Hwy 49 - Commercial, 2010, - Lincoln Executive Inn Hotel (couldn’t advise about keys or means)
n Thursday, Jan. 24 – 5000-block of Hardy Street- Commercial, 1998 Lincoln Navigator, (unlocked, left running, keys left in ignition)
n Sunday, Jan. 27 – 3100-block of Fernway Drive- Residential, Chevy Trail Blazer, (unlocked, keys left inside vehicle, vehicle found few blocks away)
n Monday, Jan. 28 – 2500-block of W. 7th Street- Residential- 2017 Hyundai Sonata (domestic dispute, other party has keys & vehicle)
“When it comes to stolen vehicles, our biggest issue is people who leave their car running and unlocked, and leaving it unattended,” said Hattiesburg Police Chief Anthony Parker. “Most people think, oh it’s just a minute, but that is all it can take and the vehicle is gone.”

K-9 helps stop fleeing subject
Lamar County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 32-year-old Wiggins man Tuesday afternoon following a vehicle pursuit south of Purvis.
Harold Chris Chancellor was taken into custody with assistance of a LCSO K-9 unit after he jumped from his vehicle and fled into nearby woods when deputies deployed spike strips to stop him.
Chancellor was driving a stolen vehicle from Mobile, Ala. and was wanted for numerous felonies in Forrest County, Marion County, and Pearl River County.
