Forrest General and Extra Table join forces to celebrate anniversary

By STAFF REPORTS,

Forrest General and Extra Table are celebrating health in a new and big way for 2019. The two have joined forces to highlight how healthy food choices affect overall health and wellness. The partnership was recently formed to honor Extra Table’s 10 years of providing healthy food to Mississippi’s most food-insecure residents.

Extra Table was launched by well-known Hattiesburg restaurateur Robert St. John in 2009 as a response to Edwards Street’s need for food. For years, Extra Table only shipped food in the Pine Belt. Today, the nationally-recognized non-profit ships food statewide to ensure that food pantries and soup kitchens have what they need each month to feed the state’s hungry neighbors.

The mission of Extra Table focuses on the shipment of only healthy and shelf stable food. Whole grain items, low-sodium soups and vegetables, fruit and lean proteins are items that pantries receive from Extra Table each month.

“In Mississippi, hunger and obesity exist simultaneously,” Extra Table Executive Director Martha Allen said, referring to Mississippi being one of the most food insecure states as well as one of the most obese. “Our food choices have great implications on our overall health.”

Forrest General and Extra Table will be releasing healthy challenges and educational information on the 10th of every month throughout this anniversary year to aid the public in healthy decision making.

“This time of year, many people will add diet and exercise to their new year’s resolutions,” Randel Smith, MD, FACC, cardiologist, said. “And physicians agree, proper exercise and a healthy diet are ways to achieve and maintain a healthy heart and body, but for people living at or below the national poverty level, eating a healthy diet may be more complicated than setting a new year’s resolution. That’s why Forrest General supports Extra Table and its mission to bring healthy food to those who need it most.”

It is never too late in the year (or too early) to create and accomplish a list of resolutions that will impact your health. Choose this year to create a list of goals that are reasonable and that will help you to live the best life possible.Wanting to make a change for the better is a step in the right direction.
