The African American Military History Museum will host a series of public programs to commemorate Black History Month.
• Thursday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m., Nothing Happens Until Something Moves: African Americans in Military Transport: The museum will kick-off Black History Month presenting a new exhibition. The event will feature guest speaker, First Sgt. David Brooks, Deputy Commandant of the 3rd Noncommissioned Officers Academy, 154th RTI, Camp Shelby. Soldiers from the 296th Transportation Company/ Brookhaven will convoy to the museum in special military vehicles used on and off the field. The vehicles will be on display in the museum’s parking lot.
• 10 a.m. every Friday in February, Story Time with a Soldier: A uniformed service member in the community will read a book chosen from the museum’s library. Story Time is open to children ages 3-9. A special tour of the museum will follow.
• 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, Youth Day at the Museum – Children and their families will have the opportunity to participate in fun and engaging educational activities about transportation. Activities include building model airplanes, creating a painting of a type of transportation, going on a special tour and more. Free youth T-shirts will be given out while quantities last.
• 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, Lunch and Learn - Military Transportation at Sea: U.S. Navy Ships Named for Africans Americans Edmond Hughes, Vice President, Human Resources & Administration (HR&A) for Ingalls Shipbuilding, will discuss how Ingalls builds warships that serve as transportation in the military. Lunch will be provided.
