The Pearl River Community College Workforce Education program is now offering commercial truck driving classes in Hattiesburg and Poplarville.
A new class starts each month, and the class — which meets from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday — meets for four weeks. Class meetings in Hattiesburg are at the Woodall Advanced Technology Center on Sullivan Drive. In Poplarville, classes meet at the college campus on U.S. 11.
Upon successful completion of the class, students will have the necessary skills to obtain a commercial driver’s license through the state. According to the federal government, workers are needed in this field due to a heavy demand for goods and to ensure the smooth flow of supply chains.
To apply, a valid Mississippi driver’s license is needed along with a Class A CDL permit, which can be obtained at driver service bureaus. The three-part permit test covers general knowledge, combination tractor-trailer vehicle operation and use of air brakes.

Applicants must also pass a drug and alcohol test and physical as mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
An applicant’s driving record, which can be obtained from the state Department of Public Safety, is also required.
Financial assistance for the $2,000 course may be available.
