Madalene’s Moms, sponsored by Forrest General Hospital’s Spirit of Women and Forrest General Hospital, is looking to deliver a new year of class activities for new and expectant mothers and their little ones.
In addition to the five classes which have been offered in the past, two new classes will also be added – Mommy and Me – Family Nights, and Bumps to Babies: Postpartum & Breastfeeding Support Group.
Hattiesburg mom, Amanda Sharp, will once again teach classes beneficial to their well-being including the opportunity to interact and exercise together with their babies and toddlers using music, movement, story, and rhyme. Topics for Moms include parenting suggestions and child development guidelines. From the First Year until Toddler Years, children are developing social, language, cognitive, and motor skills for the next season of life while building a network of friends and support.
Sharp participated in the Fitness for Two classes both before and after the birth of her four children, and she also taught the classes on several occasions for former director, Madalene Daniell, who passed away in 2022. “Through these classes I found a community of women supporting one another as they navigated the new roles of motherhood,” said Sharp. “I’m honored to continue the classes while remembering Madalene’s legacy.”
Classes to be offered include:
• Pregnancy Exercise – In a support group environment, these classes combine stretching, strengthening, and isolation exercises and awareness with education topics such as discomfort releases, labor and delivery preparation, and postpartum recovery.
• Coach’s Corner – This one-session class teaches labor and delivery, breathing techniques, and the coach’s role throughout the childbirth experience. The coach and mother-to-be attend together.
• Mommy and Me: The First Year – First-year mothers can share stories about their first-year experiences as they learn developmental milestones and fun playtime activities.
• Mommy and Me: Just Movin’ – Geared toward the early walkers, often 11 to 22 months old. Children experience activities that will develop physical, mental, and social skills.
• Mommy and Me: The Toddler Years – The Toddler Years Class is the perfect launch into pre-school. Moms and their toddlers, ages 22 months to 3 years, learn and grow while making great memories.
• Mommy & Me: Family Nights – An evening option of Mommy and Me offered to share the experience with extended family – siblings, grandparents, as well as mothers and children not available during regularly scheduled class times.
• Bumps to Babies: Postpartum & Breastfeeding Support Group – What’s good for one mommy and infant might not work for everyone. This support group of new moms addresses their postpartum needs, which may include physical and emotional recovery, breastfeeding, returning to work, adjusting to staying home, and other general questions, doubts, and concerns.
