Presbyterian Christian suffered its loss of the season last week to Hartfield Academy. Despite the 42-14 loss, PCS coach Derek White believes he has learned more about his team after the loss and is optimistic the Bobcats will bounce back.
“We didn’t play very well,” White said. “We turned the ball over. They are a very good football team. Sometimes you learn more about yourself in a loss than you do in a win.
We had our best practice of the year (on Monday). We are getting back to work.”
In the loss, running backs Briggs Sumrall and Damion McNair each ran for over 100 yards and scored a touchdown. As a defense, the Bobcats came up with eight sacks and an interception.
“We gave up four big plays,” White said. “We rushed the ball for almost 300 yards. We played a very good football team. Hartfield is a contender, but when you play as bad as you can play, and you had a chance to win the game still, it’s pretty good. It’s something to be positive about.”
This week PCS will face Lamar, a rescheduled game originally intended to be played on Aug. 13. However, the game was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within Lamar.
The Raiders (0-4) have had a tough start to the season with a combination of injuries and missing players from COVID-19 quarantines. Lamar has allowed 37 points per game on defense while its offense has mustered just an average of 11 points per game. Last week the Raiders were handed a 51-14 loss by Jackson Prep.
Due to Lamar’s roster facing constant personnel changes, the Raiders have had to alter their offense week to week.
“They are a good football team,” White said. “They have played some really good people.
“They have had to change (the offense) up. One week they throw it, and then the next week, they are more of a power-run football team. They have a really good defensive end and have a great kicker. They are going to do a good job at the skill spots. I think they have been dealing with injuries and COVID. We don’t want them to find out their identity the week they play us.”
While PCS prepares for a variety of things on both sides of the ball, for White, the main goal is to simply bounce back.
“We are going to get prepared for both and try to get better at it,” White said. “We are not going to leave a stone unturned this week.
“It’s not about who we play, but it’s about us. Every week we have to get better as a football team.”
