Presbyterian Christian’s offense made the right adjustments last week as the Bobcats pounded Silliman for a 42-2 win.
As a team, PCS ran for over 250 yards, with five different Bobcats rushing for at least 40 yards. Briggs Sumrall led the way with 71 yards and two touchdowns.
“We tweaked a couple of things, but we are still who we are,” PCS Coach Derek White said. “It was a great night. We rushed the football. We threw the football, and we did some things that were better. We are going to get better as time goes on offensively. We are seeing more reps, and we are maturing.
“We need to put it together again this week and get better.”
The Bobcats are now hoping to move to 3-0 for the first time since 2017 as PCS hosts Columbia Academy this week. The Cougars are 1-2 to start the season, and come off a 10-8 loss to East Rankin Academy.
The highlight of Columbia Academy’s team is its defense, as the group has allowed an average of nine points per game.
Linebackers Seth Mitchell and Jacob Reid lead the Cougars in tackles with 36 and 35, respectively. However, according to White, one of the most notable players on Columbia Academy’s defense is nose guard Dakota Breeland, who has two tackles for loss and 15 tackles this season.
“Their nose guard is very good,” White said. “They do a lot of things right. They squeeze and pick up blocks well. All of their games have been low-scoring. They haven’t given up a lot of points.”
Offensively, Columbia Academy has struggled in the last two games. After opening the year by scoring 42 points, the Cougars’ Wing-T offense hasn’t scored more than 14 in its last two games.
Columbia Academy’s main two running backs are Kris Ginn and Caleb King. Ginn has rushed for a team-leading 302 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries, while King has run for 154 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
“One is more of a slasher, and the other is more of a bruiser,” White said. “Both are very adequate. I think they have had a few injuries that will make them have to rely more on those guys.
“They’ll get in the spread too. You have to pay attention to that, but they are going to be a run-first football team.”
