William Carey University recently announced promotions for three administrators.
Dr. Garry Breland is now vice president for academic affairs and provost. Breland joined the university administration in 2007 as vice president for academic affairs, and, in 2019, he was given the second title of associate provost.
A William Carey alumnus, Breland previously served as vice president for academic affairs at Hannibal-LaGrange University in Hannibal, Missouri. He earned a master’s degree and a doctoral degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Dr. Ben Burnett has been named acting executive vice president. He will continue in his role as dean of the School of Education, a position he has held since 2014, and will also continue serving as executive director of PREPS, a statewide consortium of public schools. Burnett previously served as superintendent of the Lamar County School District.
Burnett is a three-time graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Teresa Poole is now associate dean of the School of Education. Poole joined William Carey in 2018 as chair of curriculum and instruction for the School of Education. Prior to her time at the university, she was a science teacher, principal, curriculum director and associate superintendent in three Mississippi public school districts.
Poole earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Jackson State University and a doctoral degree from the University of Mississippi.
“We are fortunate to have these talented, highly-qualified people in new leadership positions at William Carey University,” said Dr. Tommy King, president. “I congratulate them.”
