The Petal Jaycees, a chapter of Junior Chamber International, is gearing up to bid summer farewell with the End of Summer Movie Night featuring the family-friendly 1993 film The Sandlot.
The movie night will be held on September 23 on the back lawn of Grand Central Outfitters, 128 South Main Street in Petal. Ticket sales at $4 each will begin at 5 p.m., and the movie will play at sunset.
“This is definitely a community event to bring people together, a kind of chill-out time after school started back, to close out the summer,” Petal Jaycees chapter president Danielle Kelly said. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.
“We have a giant, 14-foot screen, and Party Box (Rentals) is going to do our projector and speaker system. We’ll be right in the back yard at (Grand Central Outfitters.”
The Sandlot is a coming-of-age sports comedy film co-written, directed and narrated by David Mickey Evans. It tells the story of a group of young baseball players during the summer of 1962 and stars Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Karen Allen, Denis Leary and James Early Jones.
The film, which is set in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California, grossed $34.3 million at the box office against its $7 million budget and has become a cult classic in the years since its release.
“We actually took a member poll, and they voted on that (movie),” Kelly said. “I think it’s just nostalgic, and it’s a really happy summertime movie.”
Concessions will be available for purchase, including popcorn, nachos and soft drinks.
“We’ll be doing that (along with) maybe some glow sticks and face painting,” Kelly said. “We’ll have the popcorn machine up and going, we’ll have nachos, and (Grand Central Outfitters) will have everything (they offer) inside.”
Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets, although tents are not encouraged.
Last fall, the Petal Jaycess hosted a fall movie night for Halloween featuring the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, which Kelly said was a successful event.
“That went really well – I think we had right at 80 folks that came out last year for that,” she said. “So hopefully we’ll get that many or more this year.
“If this (upcoming event) goes well and we see that people are enjoying it, we will try to look at doing it again maybe next month or around Christmas.”
