One person is dead after a semi-truck recently collided with a train in Forrest County.
Officials from the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department said the incident occurred at approximately noon on December 6 in the Fruitland Park area. Forrest County deputy coroner Lisa Klem said the driver of the truck was killed in the crash, and the name of the deceased is not yet being released.
The sheriff’s department, along with officials from the railroad company, are currently investigating the details of the incident. Fruitland Park is a small, unincorporated community in southern Forrest County that includes Camp Tiak, the well-known Boy Scouts of America camp.
That incident comes a little more than a month after a similar accident in Petal, where a train and a car collided at the intersection of U.S. 11 and Chappell Hill Road. Video from that incident, which occurred on October 30, shows that a woman attempted to circumvent an oncoming train while the crossguards were down over the tracks.
The woman survived and was sent to a local hospital with major injuries.
Just a day before that, a Petal alderman said he was attempting to cross the railroad tracks on East Central Avenue in Petal when, without warning, the crossguards lowered and hit his car. He and his family were not injured, although some damaged was sustained to his vehicle.
No further information is available regarding the Fruitland Park incident.
