Although a recent traffic accident involving a Petal School District school bus raised a couple of eyebrows, officials say the incident was very minor and there was no cause for concern.
Matthew Hiatt, chief of the Petal Police Department, said the accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. July 11 at the intersection of Evelyn Gandy Parkway and Herrington Road, near Petal Primary School. The bus was transporting children, but none of the parties involved in the incident were injured.
“We had a citizen travel next to the bus and made contact with the mirror,” Hiatt said. “It did damage to the civilian’s vehicle, but the bus received no damage and there were no injuries.
“There’s nothing to talk about, really. I know you’ve got a school bus with children on it, and people start (worrying), but there was really nothing to it.”
Although regular classes are out for the summer, Hiatt said the bus was transporting children to the school for extracurricular summer programs.
