Homelessness is a continuing challenge for many Hattiesburg residents.
There is no active homeless shelter to meet the needs of individuals, and sometimes whole families, who find themselves without housing.
To raise awareness about this critical issue, Twin Forks Rising and Ward 2 Councilwoman Deborah Delgado decided to call upon the community to engage in a productive conversation with those without shelter and those who serve them in the community.
This will be done by spending a night out with some of our residents currently experiencing a shelter crisis. The event will be held starting at 7 p.m. June 1 in the vacant lot behind 601 East Pine Street in Hattiesburg.
Food will be served for all participants at the event, and staff will distribute non-perishable food and personal supplies to unhoused people in the community. Some of those items include water, socks, underwear, insect repellant, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Volunteers such as members of Zeta Phi Beta, Gamma Phi Delta and Sigma Gamma Rho Sororities, will assist with making preparations for the event, cooking and serving the targeted population as well as citizens who come out to engage in the conversation.
Twin Forks Rising is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization and a registered Mississippi charity.
