After temporarily closing down for approximately two months for renovations – including repairs to the roof and several indoor improvements – officials from the Hattiesburg landmark Gold Post Sandwich House on Hardy Street celebrated the restaurant’s grand re-opening on September 21 with a packed house.
Owner Scott Lowry said restaurant staff was more than ready to get back in business after beginning repairs on July 10.
“We’re thrilled to get back up and running,” he said. “The (employees were) bored, I was bored and it was just time to get going.
“So we felt good about the staff (on opening day) and we said, ‘let’s just go full steam ahead and get back to normal business hours. We got killed (when we opened); it was brutal, but that’s what we expected. But we did great – we didn’t have any send-backs, so that was a blessing, and everybody seemed to be happy and it was a great atmosphere.”
Lowry said the customers were more than pleased by the renovations during the re-opening.
“They loved all the new furniture – we re-did the bathrooms with new plumbing fixtures and all that stuff,” he said. “We added a bunch of old pictures on the walls, new lighting, new sound system, electrical.
“So it looks 20 times better in there. It is brand-new on the inside. The exterior pretty much stayed the same – I just hated to lose that feel that we started out with, so I left the outside alone.”
The Gold Post was opened in 1971 by Lowry’s grandfather before being taken over by Lowry’s father and then Lowry himself, more than 30 years ago. The restaurant specializes in several types of Po-Boys, including but not limited to Roast Beef and Gravy, Ham and Cheese, Philly Cheesesteak and a Club. The Gold Post also offers chicken tender, shrimp and barbeque chicken plates with sides, along with salads, kids’ meals and desserts.
There’s also a variety of hamburgers and sandwiches, such as a turkey melt, ham and cheese, chicken salad, fried chicken club and country fried steak.
“We added a few things (for the reopening),” Lowry said. “We added a chicken philly and a couple of new burgers to the menu.
“And then we’ll be posting some different daily specials throughout the week, just to kind of change it up a little bit.”
And given the successful revamp, Lowry doesn’t expect to leave the business any time soon.
“I see for the future, we’re going to give it hell for another 50 years or longer,” he said.
