A man and a dog are dead after a recent collision with a train in south Forrest County.
Sherri Marengo, public information officer with the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department, said on the morning of August 24, deputies were dispatched to the scene near the intersection at Moffett Road and Old Highway 49 South in the Maxie community. Upon arriving, officers discovered there had been a fatal accident between a train and a male pedestrian at the crossing.
Apparently, two men, who were accompanied by a dog, were on their way to a fishing spot near the location when the dog became tied up in the vicinity of – but not on – the train tracks. At some point, the men heard a train approaching and went to check on the dog.
While attempting to move the dog to a safer location, the canine and one of the men were struck by a train. Neither survived the encounter.
Officials say they will not release any further information regarding the incident until next of kin are notified.
