A fire that occurred late Monday night heavily damaged a building that houses a barber shop in the Oak Grove community.
Lamar County Fire Coordinator Kyle Hill said firefighters responded at approximately 9:45 p.m. April 8 to a call of a fire at 2107 Oak Grove Road in Hattiesburg, which is the site Del’s Barber shop and several empty spaces.
“We heard that a transformer shorted out and was catching the building on fire, but that’s not what happened,” Hill said. “We got there to heavy fire in the attic.
“We’re not sure the cause of the fire or how it happened, but it was just burning the roof off the building.”
No injuries were sustained in the fire, as the building was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
“I think there’s four little shops in that building, and the only one that (houses a business right now) is the barber shop,” Hill said. “There was no damage to any other buildings – there a couple of buildings that are real close to it, but there was no damage to the surrounding buildings, because it was all contained to that building.”
Firefighters were able to contain the situation by approximately 1 a.m.
“We don’t suspect anything suspicious,” Hill said. “I’ll go up there and take a look at it, just to see … but we won’t do a full investigation, more than likely.”
