Two individuals are dead after a fatal automobile accident in Lamar County, one of whom was a teacher in the Lamar County School District.
Trooper First Class Taylor Shows, spokesperson for Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop J, said his department responded to the incident at approximately 5:30 p.m. January 31 in the 6400 block of U.S. 11 in Lumberton.
According to police reports, a 2015 Ford F-150 that was being driven by 30-year-old Christopher Lewis of Lumberton was traveling south on U.S. 11 when that vehicle collided with a 2018 Nissan Frontier driven by 59-year-old Susan Copeland. Lewis and Copeland, who was a chemistry teacher at Lumberton High School, sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
The identities of the victims were released by Lamar County Coroner Blake Matherne.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by members of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. MHP was assisted by officials from the Lamar County Sherriff’s Department.
On January 2, a candlelight vigil was held for Copeland.
