On March 11, Mayor Toby Barker announced another important infrastructure project aimed to help improve and ensure an efficient sewer and wastewater management system in the North Main Historic Neighborhood and northern downtown proper.
The Phase 1 North Main Sewer Project will include work on the sewer lines on parts of Jackson Street, East 3rd Street, East 2nd Street and Evans Street. Some of this work will be digging up and replacing lines; some will be lining existing lines with Cured In Place Pipe.
It will also include the construction of a new lift station.
The construction bid for this project came in at $2.32 million. This will be paid for out of revenues from water and sewer user fees. Grady Crawford will be the contractor, and Shows, Dearman & Waits is providing engineering services and construction oversight.
Work is expected to begin within the next month. Residents and businesses alike can anticipate temporary inconveniences such as traffic diversions and limited access to certain areas during construction.
“This project stands as another investment in the long-term viability of the North Main area of Ward 2,” Barker said. “It also keeps the city on pace to finish our consent decree’s early actions projects to reduce and eliminate sanitary sewer overflows.”
Letters have been sent to affected residents, and a meeting was held to answer questions. For more information and questions about this project, reach out to the city’s Transportation & Engineering Department at (601) 545-4640.
