Lula Mae Hulsey Myrick of Petal, Mississippi passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 101 years old.
The sixth of seven children, Mrs. Myrick was born on December 31, 1921 in Poplarville, MS to James Avery and Ulva Vermell Collins Hulsey. She graduated from Petal High School in the class of 1940 and after graduation, worked at Reliance in Hattiesburg, where she met her husband Ernest Robert “Buddy” Myrick. They wedded on March 7, 1941 and were married for 65 years until his death in July 2006. Mrs. Myrick was also a longtime employee at Efird’s Department Store in Petal, and an active member of Carterville Baptist Church for over 70 years, including participating for many decades in a cherished Bible study group.
She was the most devoted wife, the most loving mother to her three children, and the most doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She made every effort to take care of her family, her community, and anyone who came into her home, never hesitating to share her kindness, her support, or her outstanding home cooking with all in their time of need. She walked and read every day, and enjoyed excellent health until her last months. She loved jigsaw puzzles, ice cream, and most of all her family. She had many fulfilling and lifelong friendships and was beloved by all who were lucky enough to know her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters Henry Ottis Hulsey, Lemuel Owen Hulsey, Ray Hulsey Roberts, Faye Hulsey, Mavis Louise Hulsey, and Avery Hulsey, Jr.; her husband Buddy Myrick; and her daughters Mavis Diane Hebbard and Anita Faye Myrick.
