Hattiesburg baseball is sending another player to the college level with Dillon Crowell signing his National Letter of Intent with Alcorn State on Friday.
“It’s a big accomplishment to sign and take my talents to Alcorn,” Crowell said. “I just want to thank my parents and coaches for everything they have done for me.
“Alcorn and Southwest CC were the two offers that I had. I felt like (Alcorn) was a good place to go and get my education. The coach was really nice about it and just showed love.”
The senior catcher batted .379 and drove in 26 RBI last season while also recording a .981 fielding percentage.
“He’s a leader,” Hattiesburg coach Brent Barham said. “He takes control. His knowledge of the game is just beyond. He will be an amazing coach one day if he decides to take that step just because he feels the game so well and knows so much.”
Crowell will be joining former Hattiesburg teammate Jermel Ford, who signed with Alcorn last year.
“(Crowell) is one of those players that coaches always want to coach,” Barham said. “You just know that when he is not on the field that he is going to represent your program utmost. He is an all-A kind of guy and never gets in trouble in school. He’s a yes sir and no sir guy. He’s just high character. Usually, high-character players are great players on the field. He carries that on the field. He has faced diversity with injuries, and he has gotten stronger.”
