The chief financial officer of the Petal School District has been arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling after allegedly shooting a firearm though a home’s window in Hattiesburg.
According to a release issued by the Hattiesburg Police Department, 54-year-old William Wheat was taken into custody after officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 70 block of Everglades at approximately 8 p.m. November 22. When officers arrived, they were advised that a resident heard a gunshot coming from outside their home and later discovered a bullet hole in a window, located on the second floor of their residence.
No injuries were reported.
Wheat was booked into the Forrest County Correctional Facility, where his bond was set at $40,000. According to the site, Wheat has since posted bail and been released.
“Petal School District is aware of the arrest of Chief Financial Officer William Wheat,” reads a statement issued by school district officials. “He has been placed on administrative leave while we work with local law enforcement to collect more information related to the case.
“As this is a personnel issue, we are unable to provide details or discuss the specifics of the situation. We appreciate your support in this matter.”
