Officials from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are looking into a shooting involving an officer that recently occurred in downtown Hattiesburg.
According to a news release from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the shooting happened on June 3 while officers from the Drug Enforcement Agency were transporting two subjects to the William J. Colmer Federal Building on North Main Street in downtown Hattiesburg. During the transport, which was being handled by an agent and task force officer of the DEA, an altercation occurred between the agent and one of the subjects, which resulted in injuries to the agent.
The task force officer then discharged his weapon, striking the subject. The agent and the subject were consequently sent to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries.
MBI officials are currently gathering evidence related to the incident. Upon completing the investigation, agents are expected to share their findings with the office of the Mississippi Attorney General.
