A 17-year-old juvenile has been arrested and charged as an adult in relation to the recent shooting that resulted in the death of another teenager at Pineview Apartments in Hattiesburg.
Tate Rutland, public information officer with the Hattiesburg Police Department, said the male suspect, who is from Lamar County, was taken into custody on March 30 and charged with one count of first-degree murder. After being charged as an adult, the juvenile – whose identity is not being released because of his age – was booked into the Forrest County Correctional Facility.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. on March 25, when HPD officers responded to a call of shots fired at the apartment complex in the 1500 block of Country Club Road. Upon arriving, police discovered a 15-year-old female, who was found unresponsive in the exterior stairwell of the apartment complex. Officers rendered first aid to the victim until paramedics arrived, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries a short while later.
The victim was later identified as 15-year-old Jayna Lumzy.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and officials expect to make additional arrests as more information becomes available. Anyone with any knowledge pertaining to the crime is asked to call HPD at (601) 544-7900 or Metro Crime Stoppers at (601) 582-7867.
