The Hattiesburg tax preparer who was arrested and charged with 18 counts of fraud last year has once again been taken into custody, this time on three new fraud-related charges.
According to the website of the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office, 38-year-old Sharccara McNair was arrested on April 12 and charged with the following felonies:
- One count of making fraudulent statements/representations;
- One count of fraud in connection with a state-funded assistance program; and
- One count of fraud – computer.
She was booked into the Forrest County Correctional Facility.
Sharccara McNair, along with Stephanie McNair – both of whom worked at Excellent Tax Pros in Hattiesburg – was arrested in January 2023 on the original fraud charges. Sharccara was charged with 18 counts of fraud, while Stephanie was charged with 16 counts, for a total of 34.
Shortly after those arrests, Forrest County Circuit Court Judge Jon Mark Weathers assigned a bond amount of $25,000 each for Sharccara and Stephanie. At that amount, each woman paid $2,500 – or 10 percent – to bond out.
The two were represented by Hattiesburg attorney Michael Adelman.
The McNairs’ charges date back as far as 2018 and entail such crimes as falsifying individual tax returns and computer fraud.
“(The McNairs) … did willfully, knowingly, unlawfully, and feloniously defraud the State of Mississippi,” one count read. “… Under the guise of a tax professional at Excellent Tax Pros, (the McNairs) made false statements, knowing said statements were false, to-wit; fictitious business losses on (individual tax returns), contrary to the form of the statute in such cases made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the State of Mississippi.”
The court documents allege that Stephanie used a computer to prepare and file 15 falsified individual tax returns, while Sharccara is alleged to have done so 17 times.
