A Hattiesburg man has been arrested and charged after leading police on a high-speed chase that ended with his vehicle crashing into a residence.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. September 1, a Hattiesburg Police Department officer observed a black sedan driving without headlights or taillights near the intersection of West Street and West 4th Street in Hattiesburg. When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver began traveling at a high rate of speed.
The officer pursued the vehicle until it crashed into a home in the 500 block of Mable Street, at which point police were notified of the incident and emergency medical services were requested. The driver of the car, who was later identified as 26-year-old Marcus Loftin, was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Loftin was then booked into the Forrest County Correctional Facility and charged with one count of felony eluding law enforcement. According to the jail’s website, Lofton was no longer being held at the facility as of the evening of September 2.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and more information is expected to be released when it becomes available.
