Bond has been set at $250,000 for the 14-year-old who was charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed his father during a recent altercation in the Glendale community.
During a first appearance August 22 in Forrest County Juvenile Court, Judge Carol Russell set that amount for Taurence Everett and mandated if and when the teenager is bonded out, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor. In addition, Russell ordered Everett to have no contact with the family of the victim, despite the victim and suspect being father and son.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. August 20, when members of the North Forrest Volunteer Fire Department and AAA Ambulance Service arrived at 153 Scenic Drive in response to a call of a man in distress. Upon arriving, first responders discovered the man suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately notified the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the man dead of his wounds. He was later identified as 49-year-old Thomas Lavon Everett, the father of Taurence.
Shortly after, the teenager was located at a residence approximately a mile away from the crime scene and was taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Forrest County Correctional Facility and charged as an adult with first-degree murder.
During an August 21 news conference, Forrest County Sheriff Charlie Sims said the investigation into the shooting is still underway. However, police are aware the incident began after Thomas brought Taurence home from school.
“Once at home, as the father exited the vehicle, Taurence also exited the vehicle and there was a weapon in the vehicle that he had obtained,” Sims said. “He shot his father (twice) at that time.”
Officials have yet to determine the owner of the gun.
