Since the end of the Southern Miss football season, there has been no shortage of offseason moves, with several coaching changes having occurred and multiple players having entered the transfer portal.
The Golden Eagles finished the 2023 campaign with a 3-9 record. The transfer portal will be open on Monday, Dec. 4, but will have a reduced timeline from 60 to 45 days due to an NCAA rule change. A second 15-day window will open on May 1.
As of Tuesday, Nov. 28 five Southern Miss players have entered the transfer portal.
QB Zach Wilcke
Former starting quarterback Zach Wicke announced his intention to transfer on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday. The sophomore has not been with the team since the end of fall camp due to what Southern Miss coach Will Hall stated as “family issues.” As a true freshman in 2022, Wilcke threw for 1,163 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
OL Bryce Ramsey
Ramsey entered the portal as a grad transfer. He, who was a transfer from Ole Miss, also formally announced his intention to enter the portal on X. Ramsey started all but two games in 2023 at center. In two years, Ramsey appeared in 24 games and started in 15.
OL John Bolding
Bolding, who announced X, also entered the portal as a grad transfer. Bolding started every game at right guard this past season. In total, Bolding appeared in 34 games throughout his three years at USM.
QB Jake Lange
Lange also announced on X of his intention to enter the portal as a grad transfer. He started four games in 2021 due to injuries and in 2022, helped lead a comeback win against Arkansas State. Lange also spent time as the team’s holder on extra points and field goals. In his career, Lange passed for 953 yards, five touchdowns and was intercepted seven times.
OL Gerquan Scott
Scott, who has one year of eligibility left, was the first player to enter the portal. Scott started 41 games for the Golden Eagles, playing primarily at left guard. Since entering the portal, Scott has received offers from Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Colorado, Marshall, Tulsa and Houston.
