Located behind the Forrest County Chancery Building and on the side of Sugar Daddy’s Bakery on Batson Street, phase II of the Glass Ceiling mural was unveiled on Monday afternoon. The project honors the late Evelyn Gandy, the first woman elected to a statewide office in Mississippi, who served as lieutenant governor from 1976 to 1980.
This mural is the product of the collaboration of Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art, 19th Amendment Committee and Representative Missy McGee’s 2025 Gandy Leadership Academy- a six-week program for ninth-grade girls aimed at fostering community awareness and civic engagement. Led by Kym Garraway as the designer and artist behind the mural, academy participants assisted with components of the mural.
“Many thanks to Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art and the 19th Amendment Committee for allowing our 2025 Gandy Leadership Academy to continue the mural that was begun by last year’s class,” said McGee. “We are pleased to add to the public art offerings of our city while continuing to celebrate the contributions of the late Evelyn Gandy, who was a trailblazer for all the women who came behind her.”
